Why Is It Good to Attend a Yoga Retreat? What Does It Offer?

Yoga evens your life; even without solving your problems

Yoga makes our life easier, without running away from the challenges that make it difficult. It softens your day, not your challenges. The difficulties of life will always be there. No practice can make them disappear. As Buddha himself said, “no life is easy.” Yet every life can be beautiful if we learn to fill it with calm, clarity, and balance. In a way, yoga is the art of learning to live… and to live with happiness.

Nourishing Balance: A Holistic Approach

The menu at the Holistic Yoga Retreat is designed to meet all possible needs and situations: its goal is to address blockages, correct excesses, and compensate for deficiencies. Our chef creates the menu based on seasonality, a variety of flavors, and the selection of local and organic foods, while also considering the intrinsic nature of each food and its energetic properties.

The menu features, especially during the warmer months, Yin foods that cool and hydrate and are usually high in water content, such as fruits and vegetables. These foods provide a sense of freshness and well-being, but it is also important to note that excessive consumption can weaken and cool our bodies in winter. The menu is primarily based on neutral foods, which offer more stable and moderate energy. These foods, whose energetic nature is balanced—neither too cold nor too hot, neither too dry nor too moist according to Eastern tradition—include legumes, cooked grains, seeds, and nuts, and help harmonize the influences of Yin and Yang. The purpose of our menu is not only to provide temporary physical well-being but also to promote knowledge and awareness of our energetic states, helping us understand how diet can contribute to enjoying optimal health.

The Many and All Beautiful Faces of Yoga

In our Holistic Yoga Retreat, we explore the diverse disciplines that make up the vast universe of yoga. Some invite calm, introspection, and a deep connection with oneself, while others awaken energy, movement, and vitality. True awakening of consciousness arises from the balance between these two paths. Yin Yoga offers gentle, contemplative postures that promote deep relaxation and the opening of connective tissues. In contrast, Flow Yoga encourages dynamic movement and strengthens the body, renewing energy and vitality. Together, these styles complement each other, harmonizing and purifying both mind and body, guiding us toward holistic well-being.

Surrender to Advance

Every life experience culminates in an act of surrender. Our love for others reaches its peak when we let go of the desire to influence them. Similarly, our love for life flourishes when we surrender and offer ourselves to it. True transformation occurs when we relinquish control. This principle applies to yoga as well, which is why Yin Yoga can be profoundly transformative—often more so than more demanding physical activities. Our bodies change, and our minds find order when we allow goodness to flow without trying to control it. Surrender opens the door to greater blessings. By targeting the deep connective tissues, bones, joints, fascia, and ligaments, Yin Yoga stimulates energy channels and acupressure points rooted in the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine. In our Holistic Yoga Retreat, we offer a variety of disciplines considered more Yin, including Yin Yoga, Restorative Yoga, Deep Relaxation (Yoga Nidra), and Meditation.

Energy and Movement

The Flow Yoga classes we offer at the retreat will awaken your body and mind to movement, energy, and, of course, emotion. Flow Yoga is not a rigid discipline but a dynamic approach that emphasizes the fluidity of movement and breath. You will recognize sequences and practices from Vinyasa Yoga, its closest reference, as well as elements of Ashtanga, Iyengar, Kundalini, and Hatha Yoga. These disciplines generate internal heat through special breathing techniques (pranayama) and dynamic sequences that flow with the breath, alternating gentle movements and static postures (asanas) that strengthen, lengthen, and tone the muscles. Flow Yoga is suitable for everyone, not just young or strong individuals, as its movements are never exhausting but always revitalizing.

Do You Need This Retreat?

Health is not just the absence of illness; it is the ability to maintain and restore balance amid the changes of your environment and your own body. Stress, intense emotions, seasonal changes, irregular habits, or inevitable biological processes can create energy imbalances: excess or deficiency of Yin and Yang.

These imbalances manifest very concretely: excess Yin slows metabolism, causes fluid retention, and brings feelings of melancholy; Yin deficiency leads to dryness, lack of lubrication, physical aging, and a hyperalert mind; excess Yang shows up as hyperactivity, internal heat, fevers, allergies, and constant anxiety; and Yang deficiency results in low energy, apathy, and a sense of inability to act. These signals are signs that your internal balance is being lost and, if prolonged, can lead to health issues.

Our holistic yoga retreat offers the ideal opportunity to recognize your needs, respect your rhythms, and restore internal harmony. You will not only revitalize your life during the retreat but also gain tools to maintain dynamic balance and prevent future imbalances, naturally strengthening your health.

Master the Waves, Master the Mat, Master Your Mind

In surfing, just like in life, you either keep your spirits high when the waves get rough, or you sink; you either rise above the swell or get pulled under. Challenging waves reflect difficult moments in life: if you resist or lose focus, you will fall. But if you embrace the ocean’s power and adapt, you’ll ride those waves with grace. Yoga teaches a similar lesson: it’s not about forcing your body into a pose, but about honoring your current abilities and evolving through practice. Curiously, accepting life’s limitations humbly is precisely what opens the door to discovering new strengths.

Both surfing and yoga demand an agile, present, and calm mind. Whether you’re balancing on a wave or flowing through a yoga pose, true power lies in how you respond to the moment. If you tense up or let fear control you, you’ll lose balance. But if you trust yourself, breathe deeply, and stay focused, new possibilities will unfold. In our retreat, you’ll learn to connect with this mindset, applying it not only in the ocean or on the mat but also in your everyday life.

Yoga for Surfing: Take It to the Waves

There’s no better way to prepare for surfing than yoga, and no better way to unwind afterward. A pre-surf yoga class awakens your body. It helps you approach the waves with calm and alertness, feeling relaxed yet ready for action. Yoga improves flexibility, balance, and focus, putting you in the best state of mind to fully enjoy whatever the ocean has in store. After a day at sea, a yoga session is perfect for reconnecting with your body and recovering from physical exertion. At Villa Azul, you can tailor your experience. Book your yoga sessions in advance, or decide on the spot what your body needs. Classes are held in our serene yoga room overlooking the garden or in Buddha’s Garden, surrounded by lush greenery, fruit trees, and palm trees. You can also add on Taichi, Qigong, or Taoist gymnastics classes for a more holistic experience.

Insider Tips for Prime Surfing Experience

Benefit from the expertise of local instructors who know the island’s hidden treasures. Our instructors are natives of Fuerteventura, passionate about sharing their love for surfing. Their extensive knowledge of the best surfing spots ensures you have the best possible experience in the water. They offer personalized lessons tailored to your skill level, helping you progress while you enjoy the waves. You will discover hidden coves and learn to navigate the ocean with confidence, all under the watchful eye of your dedicated instructors.

Find Yourself in the Waves

Surfing is much more than just a sport for surfers. They often talk about the so-called wisdom of the ocean because they feel they learn important life lessons while riding their boards. If you are an experienced surfer, you already know what we mean, and if you’re just about to start, you probably already have an intuition about it. Surfing awakens a very authentic and instinctive sense of physical empowerment that emerges naturally when you’re in the middle of one of the world’s most powerful forces: the ocean. Even when the sea is calm, we know it remains ungovernable. That’s why no one attempts to dominate or subdue it. The feeling of strength and validation we experience while surfing comes from joining the ocean’s movement, not from controlling it. Surfing teaches us to balance humility and confidence—humility in the face of the ocean’s power, and confidence in our ability to become part of its force.

Revitalize and Rejuvenate with Every Bite

Finding balance is crucial in surfing, yoga, and in life, and nutrition plays a key role in this harmony. Engaging in these activities requires ample energy and a focus on light, wholesome meals that support your active lifestyle. At Villa Azul, our talented chef embraces this challenge, crafting meals that are not only energizing but also delightful.

We prioritize organic and fresh ingredients to create delicious dishes that nourish your body and enhance your experience. Each day, you’ll enjoy a thoughtfully prepared menu that balances vitality and flavor, ensuring you have the strength for your surf sessions and the lightness needed for yoga practice. Allow yourself to savor the culinary delights that will invigorate your journey towards wellness.

Why You Should Join Our Yoga and Qigong Retreat

We say that your body is the gateway to your spirit because it does not distinguish between what you do on the mat and what happens in your everyday life. There is no separation between practice and life. When you repeat gentle movements, conscious breathing, and calm, mindful attitudes during Yoga or Qigong, your nervous system learns a new way of being: more relaxed, less reactive, more present. This bodily and mental memory then activates outside of practice, gradually becoming your natural way of living.

Both Qigong and Yoga cultivate an open, receptive, and spontaneous attitude toward life’s unfolding events. This surrender to the universal flow is known as Wu Wei in Qigong and Aparigraha in Yoga. Wu Wei translates as “effortless action” or “non-doing,” and does not imply passivity; rather, it means allowing things to follow their natural course without forcing or controlling, releasing resistance and anticipation. Aparigraha, on the other hand, means “non-attachment” or “non-possession,” an ethical principle that encourages freedom from dependence on outcomes, possessions, emotions, or even circumstances.

In our retreat, you will cultivate these guiding principles through joyful practice: without worrying about perfection, without comparing yourself to anyone, and without seeking achievements or recognition—simply for the pure delight of celebrating life in its fullness.

Two Arts, Two Paths, One Vision

While Yoga has reached a universal dimension, Qigong remains a hidden gem, known outside of China only by a select and fortunate minority of practitioners. They are, without a doubt, very different disciplines in many ways, yet both are internal arts that have achieved the highest levels of development and excellence in the world.
When practiced with sensitivity and awareness, the exercises of Yoga and Qigong seem to provide practitioners with greater vital energy, more life. This perception may not be entirely accurate, but it comes quite close. What actually happens is that, free of blockages, the body allows a more harmonious and powerful flow of energy, which literally revitalizes all its organs and enhances their functions. In a way, when we stop resisting life and open ourselves to it, life manifests as health, vitality, and beauty. Life unfolds on its own, both within us and around us.

Life is Energy Taking Shape

Qigong is the ancient Chinese practice with a 4,000-year history that combines physical movement, breath control, and meditation to harmonize the body’s energy, known as Qi. It is both a preventive and healing practice, closely linked to Traditional Chinese Medicine. In the same spirit, disciplines such as Acupuncture and Auriculotherapy are available at our center if you wish to complement and enrich your retreat. In this way, you can expand your experience and get even closer to the benefits of ancient Eastern medical philosophies, based on paradigms different from Western medicine—perhaps more exotic for us, but equally relevant and applicable in many parts of the world.

Practice One Step Closer to the Sky

The yoga and qigong retreat takes place in a natural setting that enhances the connection with practice, including excursions and outdoor activities in the stunning landscapes of the beautiful island of Fuerteventura, whether on the dunes, at the beach, or near one of the iconic volcanoes that reveal the rich geological history of the region. Especially regarding the practices by the volcano and its magical energy, we often say that we go out to practice “closer to the sky.” This expression is, indeed, a play on words for us, as volcanoes are evidently elevated, but we mean it in a figurative sense. Given that the sky has always symbolized, in all cultures, what seems elevated and pure, what we truly want to convey is that we seek a practice that elevates our spirit. Therefore, the ultimate purpose of practicing yoga and qigong is indeed to bring us closer to the sky, to liberate ourselves, and to rise

Delicious Food that Supports, Nourishes, and Elevates Your Journey

Indulge in a vibrant array of dishes, from colorful salads packed with seasonal vegetables to light and tonifying soups, healthy grain bowls, and delicious plant-based options. Of course, there are also delightful sweet yet healthy desserts filled with colorful and fragrant fruits, ensuring a delicious finish to each meal. Our chef’s culinary offerings expertly balance refreshing Yin foods, such as fresh fruits and vegetables that cool and hydrate, with stimulating Yang ingredients that invigorate and comfort, like certain vegetables and legumes intelligently seasoned with spices such as ginger and pepper. The bulk of the meals focuses primarily on neutral foods that provide stable energy and promote balance, including legumes, cooked grains, seeds, and rice, among others. Enjoy your meals in a serene setting, surrounded by the beauty of nature, while connecting with fellow retreat participants and sharing the joy of mindful eating.
